La contaminación del Río Choluteca, podría ser revertida si las autoridades toman cartas en el asunto

Tegucigalpa. Cientos  de personas  y medios de transporte  pasan  diariamente por los puentes que conectan Tegucigalpa  y Comayagüela. El entorno  no es precisamente agradable ,  ya que la principal atracción  son los  zopilotes  que sobre vuelan por  la basura , y la suciedad  que se reflejan  en el  río Choluteca  mismo que un día  históricamente  fue  un lugar   lleno de  hermosos recuerdos donde jóvenes  intrépidos  aprendían a nadar  en los años 40 y 50. Los  paseos  al barrio la Granja  en el cual se planificaban  las salidas  entre parejas con la constante  vigilancia de las apodadas “Chaperonas religiosas”. Según  comenta Max Velázquez  Matute  especialista en agua y saneamiento del BID.

En esa época   también  imperaba  la diversidad de  la fauna acuática como: Cangrejos, peces, langostinos de río,  y “perros de agua” o  nutrias.  Pero  esos buenos recuerdos  quedaron Sumergidos  en  la memoria de quienes disfrutaron   del  paisaje  cuya  belleza  ha sido destruida por la misma  sociedad.

Actualmente  el Río Choluteca ubicado en la región sur de Honduras es uno de los más contaminados del país, a su paso por la capital Tegucigalpa aumentan las concentraciones de DBO (Demanda Bioquímica de Oxigeno y reducción del Oxigeno disuelto creando condiciones anaeróbicas.

Las causas son el vertido de aguas residuales sin un previo tratamiento y el esparcido de desechos sólidos directamente al río o arrastrado por la escorrentía. Desafortunadamente  Su imagen esta asociada  con la tragedia y el terror , en los libros  de historia  se pueden leer varios relatos  sobre las  inundaciones  que ocurrieron  en los  años; 1907, 1936, 1954, 1974 donde hubieron  inundaciones  que causaron , estragos y muerte en varias zonas del  país . El mejor ejemplo   fue   en  el  año de 1998  con el catastrófico   Huracán Mitch  el cual dejo  grandes pérdidas  físicas y económicas, y la zozobra de que si la población esta preparada para soportar  una  tragedia de la misma magnitud.

Varios Expertos en medio ambiente  exponen  que  el agua se contamina por culpa de la actividad humana , ya que la población va creciendo cada año, necesitando más agua,  comida, más transporte,  vestimenta,  recursos y más espacio en el que vivir.Por todo ello, se produce la emisión de gases tóxicos, la contaminación por desechos, metales y pesticidas; la descarga de desechos químicos y material radiactivos; o bien accidentes, como los derrames de petróleo.

La pregunta que muchos se hacen  al ver  el deterioro  del  río Choluteca  es de que  si  hay alguna posibilidad de que se pueda salvar. Velázquez   expresa que muchas ciudades del mundo  exhiben con orgullo sus ríos  urbanos,  que los definen como tales  después de muchos esfuerzos  importantes de recuperación ambiental en  ese sentido se podría salvar la vida del afluente  , si las autoridades   siguieran  el ejemplo de otros países que   emprendieron  este proyecto  a  través  del saneamiento  del recurso natural .

Entre los  casos  de países  que  recuperaron sus  ríos se encuentran:  Temesis de Londres , el Sena en París , Limmat  zurich, Tomebamba en Cuenca  Ecuador , y el río Medellín de Colombia.

Dada la importancia del Río Choluteca, su recuperación  debería tener como objetivo no sólo la calidad de agua sino también la ciudad adyacente – salvar a una parte del territorio  del deterioro urbano que viene sufriendo desde hace años.

Un proyecto afanoso, debería incluir temas estratégicos como la protección y manejo de las cuencas abastecedoras de agua para la capital, y otras claves relacionadas con la infraestructura urbana, tales como la recolección, tratamiento  y disposición segura de aguas servidas al ambiente,  los residuos sólidos, el drenaje, los espacios verdes (incorporando inclusive , infraestructura verde) la revalorización del Centro Histórico, la movilidad, la seguridad ciudadana y el desarrollo urbano, todos articulados en territorio.

Si  las autoridades  no se preocupan  por gestionar  proyectos que protejan el medio ambiente y  las generaciones  actuales no tienen una educación  de conciencia  acerca de la importancia  del mismo  se corre el riesgo de  vivir  en un   futuro  nefasto.
